Legian is a mixed tourist / residential area on the west coast of Bali just north of Kuta and south of Seminyak.

Often mention in the same breath as Kuta, Legian borders Kuta to the north (for our purposes we define Legian as the area between Jl. Melasti and Jl. Dhyana Pura) and is much the same as Kuta when it comes to inexpensive accommodations, restaurants and shopping. That said Legian is a bit quieter because there is no direct public access road along the beach giving the area a more resort feel.

The Legian area is very easy to explore on foot. The shops (and there are a lot of them) still tend to be simple family owned souvenir places (art and crafts, t-shirts and the like) where tenacious shoppers can find hidden treasures and bargaining is the rule.

Neighboring Kuta to the north and similar to Kuta but generally a bit quieter. Great central location.

Legian extends from The Legian Beach Hotel to Hotel Jayakarta on what is still known as Rum Jungle Road. All types of accommodation including villas are available, along with some good eating and a few interesting bars, most of which close by midnight. Legian is a quieter area with less traffic than either Kuta Central or Seminyak as it has its own one-way system leading in and out. The Beach hotels are separated from the actual beach by the new village-owned road, which is closed to traffic.

Because of rocketing property values most expatriates have left this area for cheaper rents but you will still see untouristy things like westerners walking dogs and even one with a dog on his motorbike!
